Every time I build a business case for a product that uses AI, there is one line in the spreadsheet that worries me more than the others: inference cost per call.
This week I saw a strong reminder of why that concern is justified. Starting August 31, Claude Sonnet 5 pricing rises 50%: from US$2 and US$10 per million tokens (input and output) to US$3 and US$15. A workload that costs US$2,000 per month today becomes US$3,000, with no change in usage.
That may sound like a footnote from a technology vendor. It is not. Anyone building a product on top of a third-party model is, in practice, working with a variable input that can become more expensive overnight. It is similar to what we already experience in credit: funding and cost of capital change all the time, and that needs to be built into the final product price—not discovered after customers are already using it.
From the product side, this reinforces a discipline that applies to any business with a meaningful variable cost: monitor margin closely, simulate cost-increase scenarios before they happen, and understand how much of the final price can absorb a shock like this without breaking the economics.

It is also an invitation not to put all your eggs in one basket. For workflows that depend on AI agents, that choice needs to account for cost per call and system behavior on the real workload, not only the published price or an isolated benchmark.
